Add to that the widespread blending of biodiesel (up to 4.9% Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) content in standard #2 diesel), and now your generator fuel:

Today’s fuel can pass traditional ASTM D975 testing

That’s not because ASTM standards are wrong – they still serve an important purpose – but they were developed around older diesel chemistry. Before ULSD and biodiesel blends were introduced, standard #2 diesel maintained a much longer shelf life. But today’s fuel behaves differently.

By removing 99.7% of the sulfur that used to prevent biological contamination, ULSD fuel is far more likely to develop bacteria, fungus, and microbial infestations in long-term fuel storage tanks.
